In this, the fourth of our “Right Track to... series,
Tony Wright visits Over Peover.
This is John Ryan’s private and extensive
”O” gauge layout depicting a section of the LNER
/ BR main line based upon prototype practice. After a short
conversation with John, there’s a fantastic range of
locomotives and rolling stock in full action - all operating
perfectly, often at high speeds! John Ryan is a born and bred
Doncastrian. So much so that he’s the current chairman
of Doncaster Rovers football club.
Two periods are depicted on Over Peover. The first is the
late ’30s - heyday of the LNER. Gresley A4s are much
in evidence with their rich variety of liveries - two-tone
grey, garter blue with red wheels and of course, glorious
apple green. All are hauling appropriate stock in grey, two-tone
blue and teak.
The second depicts John‘s train-spotting days at “Donny”
from the 1950s with another rich variety of colours. This
time it’s blue, Brunswick green, carmine/cream and maroon.
But it’s not just A4s. Many other classes are well represented
too.
The layout is huge and contained in a large purpose-built
shed at John’s home. Even the shed cannot contain the
layout which is a folded 8 configuration with running outside
on raised timbers.
With railwaymen in his family, a passion for railways and
a hometown renowned for its railways, John (with the help
of Norman Solomon) has created a “dream come true”.
This DVD is a rare opportunity to share that dream.
Running time 35 minutes
