| In the second in our new “The Right Track to...” series, we visit Pendon Museum.
Pendon has been described as the finest
model railway ever created. In fact there are
three principal scenes. There’s Dartmoor,
the sea wall at Teignmouth and the
incredible Vale of White Horse.
The vision of the late Roye England, it’s a
testament to the exacting standards he
laid down when he began to re-create, in
perfect miniature, rural scenes of the 1930s
on the beautiful border between Oxfordshire
and Berkshire.
The area just happened to have a railway
running through and, aided by the late
Guy Williams, who provided the electrical
and mechanical skills to actually make the
railway work, Roye eventually saw his
dream realised, though not completed, in a
purpose-built museum at Long Wittenham,
in Oxfordshire.
The Dartmoor scene features a huge
Brunellian timber viaduct carrying a long
goods train with 85 trucks - a magnificent
scene indeed!
We follow Tony Wright as he goes on a
tour of this inspirational establishment with
three key members of the Pendon team.
The construction, operation, history,
philosophy and the future of Pendon
are all considered - and all illustrated with
outstanding detailed pictures.
It’s taken 50 years to achieve these
standards, making the Pendon experience
one not to be missed.
